2017 DISCOVER:

New Musicals Submission Guidelines

We are pleased to announce the 6th annual DISCOVER: New Musicals  program, a presentation of staged-readings of new short or one-act musicals presented in New York in early December 2017.

Interested writers may apply to DISCOVER: New Musicals  by submitting a short or one-act musical and completed one-page application form to NAAP. Writers are also asked to submit no more than 2 submissions for which they have authored. A panel of musical theatre professionals, headed by Baayork Lee, will serve as the selection committee for the evening's presentations.

Selected musicals will be produced as staged readings with casts of professional actors, predominantly of Asian-American heritage, through open auditions. (Note that there is not a company of actors to choose from and casts are not shared.)

NAAP will fund, produce, and invite industry professionals to the musicals presented. In the interest of continuing to develop artistic leaders, NAAP will also provide directors from their roster of experienced directors.

The evening's artistic program will be determined by the quality and range of submissions and not by any set number of pieces.

Project Eligibility:

It is NOT necessary for the writers to be of Asian descent. Also, the musical’s style, theme, and subject matter are open, but the piece should be able to be realized with an Asian-American cast. Only musicals no longer than 30-minutes in length will be considered. PLEASE TIME SUBMISSIONS. The musical may be excerpted from a longer musical, but excerpt must feel complete in itself. It is not required for the writers to have been produced in the past.

Application Timeline:

Applications are available online at www.naaproject.org and will be accepted through September 8, 2017 . The selected projects will be announced in late September. Auditions will be held in early-mid October with rehearsals starting in mid-November. Performance will be early December. Performance venue is currently TBD, but has historically been at the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre located on West 47th  Street.

Evaluative Criteria:

Applications will be evaluated based upon 5 criteria:

●  Overall artistic merit

●  Impact of presentation on writer and project

●  Storytelling – does this feel like a complete story?

●  Originality – NAAP wishes to present diverse works

●  Ability of NAAP to execute and serve the project

Please be sure to consider this when choosing a project to submit. Writers are also asked to submit no more than 2 submissions for which they have authored, particularly keeping in mind two equally weighed submissions could reduce each other’s chances for final selection.

Application Process:

Those interested in applying for NAAP’s DISCOVER: New Musicals program can download the one-page application at the link below. Please mail the completed application with 3  copies of your script (if submission for consideration is an excerpt, then submit only the excerpt) and 3 demo CDs of the piece with vocals. Professional demos are not necessary, but keeping in mind poor audio often affects listening quality during evaluation . Mail to NAAP’s administrative office:
