HONOR with Prospect Theater Company

NAAP was proud to announce its first collaboration with Prospect Theater Company as part of NAAP's Rediscover Series and Prospect’s IGNITE Series. HONOR is a musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy As You Like It, set in feudal Japan.

With a cast of over 100 supervised by Ms. Lee and acclaimed director Richard Jay-Alexander, the evening featured seasoned Broadway professionals—friends and supporters of NAAP—staging many of the numbers. With a full orchestra led by Broadway musical supervisor and conductor Kevin Stites, costume design by Jimm Halliday and lighting & sound design by Matt Berman, this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to support this worthy company as they head into the future.

The show featured an ambitious lineup of 20 classic Broadway musical numbers, most of them highlights from NAAP productions of the past five years, but some added to just show off the performers’ virtuosity.

Rediscover Series: Hello Dolly!

On  April 29, 2013 and May 6, 2013 NAAP proudly presented the wildly entertaining classic, Hello Dolly, for its third presentation of the NAAP Rediscover Series, directed by Lee Roy Reams and starred Christine Toy Johnson as Dolly. We were honored to have in attendance at these performances, Nick Wyman (President of Actors Equity Assoc) and Sarge Aborn (Tams-Witmark) among others. Once again this performance proves that great pieces of theatre speak to all communities. All photos courtesy of Eric Bondoc.

Rediscover Series: Oklahoma!

This was the first event in our “Rediscover Series” in which we explored classic works with Asian artists, thus giving them a new face. We began with OKLAHOMA! because it is the most American of musicals and its theme of a new frontier speaks to NAAP’s mission as well; forging inexorably ahead into artistic territory with new ideas and commitment.

Oliver!

NAAP presented  the classic Charles Dickens musical, OLIVER! in June 2014 as part of the Redscover Series. With book, music and lyrics by Lional Bart, OLIVER! has become one of the most popular musicals in the world. NAAP presented the London version of this show under the direction of Steven Eng and choreography by Baayork Lee. Starring Raul Aranas as Fagin, Anthea Neri as Nancy and Bonale Zohn Fambrini as Oliver.

Rediscover Series: Carousel

With honored guests that included Mary Rodgers (daughter of composer Richard Rodgers) and playwright David Henry Hwang among others, CAROUSEL was rediscovered for a whole new community and generation right on 42nd Street in New York City. By selecting such an important American work that dealt with human themes including domestic abuse, redemption, and love, this performance proved that great pieces of the theatre speak to all communities. King and I

On October 17th and 18th, 2009, NAAP co-produced a semi-staged fully professional concert production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic, The King and I, in Eatonton, Georgia. In collaboration with Oconee Performing Arts Society, nine professional actors were brought from New York (including eight of Asian descent) to perform with local professionals and the Atlanta Pops Orchestra. Baayork directed and Kevin Farrell conducted.
